Southern Kings pass Border test

The Southern Kings beat the Border Bulldogs in their first Super Rugby pre-season friendly at the Buffalo City Stadium in East London on Saturday evening.

The visitors scored the only points of the first half as flyer Malcolm Jaer crossed the try line after four minutes. Flyhalf Ntabeni Dukisa converted to give his side a 7 point lead.

The score board remained unchanged for the rest of the half as the Kings took a slender seven point lead into the half time break.

Border struck back at the start of the second half as eighthman Lukhanyo Siyobi scored their first try. The conversion was missed as the Southern Kings held on to a two point lead, 7 - 5.

Ill discipline saw the Kings receive two yellow cards, but despite this, the Bulldogs were unable to score any points.

Replacement scrumhalf, Johan Steyn scored their second try as the match reached the final quarter. Replacement flyhalf Garrick Mattheus added the extras to extend their lead to 14 - 5 as the game reached the final quarter.

Replacement wing, Makazole Mapimpi scored their third try in the 68th minute. Mattheus converted to stretch their lead to 21 - 5.

Minutes later Border fullback, Sonwabise Mqalo scored their second try to reduce the deficit to eleven points, 10 - 21.

There was still time left for the Kings to score a final try as reserve prop Justin Forwood dotted down their fourth try. Mattheus was on target as he slotted his third successive conversion.

Final scored 28 - 10.
